These authors emerged from the Squaw Valley Community of Writers as many do — with a desire to keep the magic going.  They have been meeting in workshop — with some slight alterations — for over five years, usually at the Mojo Café in South Berkeley.  Their work is diverse, and there is a strong thread of place as subject.  Chris has been writing intensely beautiful poems about the borderlands of Berkeley/Oakland, not just geographically, but by examining the tensions and revelations of living where cultures intersect.  Dan mines memory, music, and roads that have spanned from America to Israel in cadences that similarly span from clipped to rolling.  Eliot also has written to give voice to uniquely American longings, with long lines that are nevertheless increasingly compressed.  Judy's lines are shorter—often a carefully constructed pastiche of imagery, dense with reference to Japan, where she studied and worked.  All four share mutual respect and humor.  Cumulatively, they've got the mojo.
